There is always plenty to do in Munich, but to help you plan your visit we have listed down some of the city's major events for 2004. Happy planning!

February 2004

  • 27th February - 4th April 2004 - Starkbierzeit - Strong-Beer Season. Oh dear here comes trouble! During this period extra strong beer is served - a tradition started in the Middle Ages when monks, who weren't allowed to eat during Lent invented a beer that would nourish them. Yeah, right.

March 2004

  • 10th March - 19th March 2004 - a week of ballet. A week long feast of ballet at the Nationaltheater.
  • 13th March - 26th June 2004 - Picasso in Munich. The Lenbachhaus hosts a large collection of the artists work.
  • 20th March 2004 - the Long Night of the Media. Lots of interesting media stuff going on into the night.

April 2004

  • 3rd April 2004 - the Long Night of Books. Over a 100 venues will be open all night for readings, book exhibitions and discussions.
  • 17th April - 2nd May 2004 - Spring Fair. Fun rides and of course, beer tents at the Theresienwiese. This is the 40th Spring Fair.
  • 24th April - 2nd May 2004 - Maidult. This fair is held in the 'Au' borough 3 times a year. You'll find Europe's largest China market plus plenty more.

May 2004

  • 12th May - 28th May 2004 - 9th Munich Biennale, An international festival for new music theatre. New operas composed by 5 international composers will be performed for the first time.
  • 05 May 2004 - The Long Night of Music. More than 60 venues featuring all kinds of live music staying open all night.

June 2004

  • Mid June - City Festival. This festival celebrates the founding of the city of Munich. The majority of events take place between Marienplatz and Odeonsplatz.
  • 17th June - 11th July 2004 -Tollwood Summer Festival. Theatrical and musical events plus the normal festival food, taking place at the southern end of the Olympic Park.

July 2004

  • 24th July - 1st August 2004 - Jacobidult. The second 'Au' of the year - Traditional market and fair at Mariahilfplatz.
  • Early July 2004 - International Film Festival. Munich becomes the film capital for a week.

August 2004

  • 5th August - 22nd August 2004 - Summer Festival. Lots of music at the amphitheatre down by the Olympic park's lake.

September 2004

  • 18th September - 3rd October 2004 - Oktoberfest. Yes it starts in September despite its name. The world's largest beer festival, originally held to celebrate the wedding of King Ludwig I in 1810.

November 2004

  • 28 November - 24 December 2004 - the Christmas Market. Lots of sausages and mulled wine on Marienplatz - truly magical.
